According to Kionka, Pretoria — the administrative capital of South Africa where all embassies to the country are location — is second only to the UN in New York for hosting the largest number of foreign representations in the world.

Unfortunately, but understandably, Estonia is not among them, even though some Estonian businesses, such as the ridesharing company Bolt, have made inroads here. This means the EU sees South Africa not only in a bilateral sense and as a regional leader, but also as a force on the global stage.

This means that the cityscape is dominated by the purple flowers of the jacaranda trees, for which Pretoria is famous. Sort of like cherry blossoms in Japan but only an extravaganza of purple instead of pink. People seem very friendly and open and accepting. That would never happen in Estonia! I wanted to come here!

Yes, the crime here is terrible and, especially, violent crime, and, in particular, that perpetrated on women and girls. And it hurts the potential of this country to attract the foreign investments it so desperately needs. This was before Rudy Giuliani became mayor of New York. So, if it can happen in New York, it can happen here, too. Most recently, Kionka was the chief foreign policy advisor to the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, which made her the most influential official of Estonian nationality in the European Union.

Kionka was born in Detroit, Michigan, in to an Estonian mother and an American father of German descent. As a kid, she wanted to become a musician and a conductor. However, fate had other plans for her. So, when I entered university, it was with the thought of studying law.

As a digital leader with firsthand experience of the threats posed by Russia, Estonia has been a go-to country in EU decision-making. Other small, recently joined EU countries might get a passing grade by simply not messing up. But Brussels is expecting more from Tallinn. Here are the 15 Estonians you most need to know. Inshe worked as the human rights envoy for Javier Solana, the EU's first foreign policy high representative.

She has been working for Tusk since If you want something done at the Commission, your best bet is to call Martin Selmayr, Jean-Claude Juncker's chief of staff.

And to get to Martin Selmayr, the person most people need to call is Marit Sillavee, his Estonian assistant, who left a high-powered PR job in London to return to the Selmayr fold. Like many of his confidantes, Sillavee got her start in the Commission's digital department, where the pair worked for Viviane Reding during the Barroso Commission. Tael comes armed with experience as Estonia's ambassador to the United Kingdom and to Germany.

That makes him the most senior Estonian in Brussels. Hololei previously held the senior role of deputy secretary-general of the European Commission, giving him a valuable birds-eye view of the workings of the executive.

The American-educated defense expert worked for the Estonian ministry of defense for many years before moving to NATO. Lepassaar is Ansip's chief of staff, and he has the vice president's ear on digital policy decisions. Tech seems to run in the family.

He is also the son of former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves and shares his father's penchant for bow ties. The press team of the Estonian permanent representation is a powerhouse.

Lamp recently joined the embassy from the European Commission spokespersons service.

Riina Kionka spoke to Women In Foreign Policy about adapting to changing international environment, seizing new opportunities and working in a multilateral institution.

It meets at least four times a year, but in practice far more frequently. I have been interested in foreign affairs since childhood.

We talked about foreign affairs at home, and I recall being politically quite aware even as a child. I remember I was the first to grab the Time Magazine, which at that time was the only weekly magazine that had a good foreign affairs coverage in the US, when it arrived home.

I grew up in the United States, in a bilingual home- I spoke Estonian with my mother and grandmother and English with my father. I think being different and having a strange nationality defined my thinking because I always had to explain, what and where Estonia is and why we cannot find it on the political map. Though I was interested in foreign affairs from the beginning, I did not think about it as a career until university. Moving to your time at university, you were doing your PhD when the Berlin Wall fell.

What kind of effect it had on you? I have been very privileged to live in interesting times. Indeed, I was writing my dissertation at Columbia University, but it just got too exciting, and I wanted to work on the issues of the day, rather than sit in a library.

So, I joined the radios. There was something in the air at that time. Government after government was falling and it was like watching a tennis match or a sports game, you never knew who is going to fall next. Or which of your colleagues will spend several sleepy weeks covering the issues of the day. The world changed entirely in the space of years. It affected my academic career because it took me away from it. There was too much temptation and exciting stuff going on and consequently, I did not finish my PhD for a very long time [Riina Kionka defended her PhD thesis at Columbia University in ].

I knew somebody who was writing a thesis on why the changes in the East did not affect the German Democratic Republic.

The week after filing her dissertation, the Wall came down. This was just very bad luck academically although excellent luck politically. Your career has been shaped by events happening in the world and less by what you imagined and planned for your career. Yes, I think this has been one of the lessons as well. You can plan and prepare all you want, but the world may not agree.

This means that you are much better off preparing yourself to be a resilient critical thinker, who can put these skills into use regardless of the shape of the change. You need to be open to chances and opportunities and take those risks that come along. That summer she was an intern with Radio Free Europe in Munich while the following year she took an intensive course in Russian at Norwich UniversityVermont.

Manchester City has finished in the top three of the English Premier League standings five times in the last six seasons, including championships in 2012 and 2014 and runner-up finishes in 2013 and 2015. City enters this season as the favourite to climb back to the top of the league. After surrendering 39 goals last season, Man City made it a top priority to address the backend this off-season, and they did exactly that with the acquisitions of Ederson Moraes in goal and defenders Kyle Walker and Danilo.

Chelsea lost only five games last season in a 30-win campaign, winning the league title with a 30-5-3 record. Manchester United scored only 54 goals last season, letting an excellent defensive season go to waste with a sixth-place finish. The defence should once again be elite this year, and the acquisition of Belgian sniper Romelu Lukaku is likely to boost production on offence.

Tottenham finished runner-up last season despite allowing the fewest goals in the league (26) and scoring the most (86). Arsenal finished runner-up in 2016 and fifth on the table last year, and will need a better showing on defence to get back into the mix this year.

One guiding factor is those taking a chance on improving or recovering teams and those who think the market principles look too strong to oppose. For NickOne guiding factor is those taking a chance on improving or recovering teams and those who think the market principles look too strong to oppose. Nick Goff: It may lack a bit of imagination to tip the favourite but the New England Patriots are the best team, in a very weak division, and if Tom Brady stays healthy they are very likely to be appearing in another Super Bowl.

They have a young improving defence and will start the season with their big four offensive weapons on the field for the first time in more than a year. The Packers were unfortunate to meet a juggernaut Falcons team last year, and I think their defence will improve enough this year to get them over the hump.

There was a reasonable amount of consensus on this one with the Tennessee Titans getting a lot of love from the panel, although there is a pretty bold shout from Brad and a very bold shout from Jesse in amongst them. Nick Goff: The Tennessee Titans have a huge chance to win their division and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

The expected improvement of Tennessee QB Marcus Mariota is one of the main reasons many of our experts fancy a decent season out of the Titans. If the regress to the mean in games decided by seven points or less (went 1-8) last year, they should challenge for the NFC East title.

Quarterback Wentz should also improve in his second season and enjoy the protection of Lane Johnson at left tackle for a full season.

Johnson was suspended ten games last year, and without him Wentz posted a 48. Jesse May: I think Head Coaches are generally underrated in the scheme of ratings and modelling.
